The objectives of the in-plant
demonstration projects are to show how the concept of cleaner production
works in Viet Nam and the benefits brought about through its implementation.
The programme is also expected to provide hands-on training for the participants
in our intensive training programme. With these objectives, results of
demonstrating companies are used to promote cleaner production in Vietnam.
Demonstration sectors are:
Pulp and paper, Textile, Metal Finishing and Food Processing. Companies of
the above sectors will receive no or low cost technical assistance from
the centre to carry out cleaner production program.
"In
the beginning of the programme, we thought cleaner production
is just to keep the machines clean. Now, after the cleaner production
assessment, we have realized that CP is much more than that"
– said the owner of Nhat Tri Manufacturing Unit
at a workshop in August 2000.
"Cleaner production
measures are not only complicated, but can also be quite simple
like insulation of heat pipes, using water properly in the right
time, right place ... and these measures have saved us a lot of
money already" – Ninh Binh Brewery.
"In our company,
we just started with easy and cheap cleaner production measures.
These have brought quite high economic and environmental benefits.
However, we are not completely satisfied with the results. We
will definitely implement the more expensive and complicated options
that also are feasible. We want to spend our own money for these
options" – Mai Lan Paper Company.

Viet Nam Cleaner Production
Centre applies the Cleaner Production Assessment
methodology to its in-plant demonstration projects.
From demonstration to current activities
In order to extend the future activities and
consultant market in Vietnam, the
VNCPC uses three approaches in carrying out its assessments of companies.
They are:
- On-the-job
training combined with demonstration:
The centre organizes intensive cleaner production training programmes (4
modules). Selected technical staff of the companies join the training
programme and apply CP in their own company with assistance from the centre
staff. In-company training is organized for the whole CP team of the
company. This is applied to companies in the sector selected as the year’s
focus sector. After the programme, the technical staffs of participating
companies are able to maintain the cleaner production themselves.
-
Semi-consultancy:
The centre also organizes intensive technical trainings for selected staffs
of companies and work together with their CP team. During the assessment,
the centre staff helps team members to develop cleaner production
opportunities and to monitor results.
-
Consultancy:
The staff of the centre works together with cleaner production teams of
the companies to develop their options. The staff of the centre carries out
necessary measurements and analysis.
